Old-fashioned guidebooks and new-fangled online guides (like this one!) are particularly helpful for big-picture travel planning. They aim to be comprehensive–but they can never be complete.
Once you’re actually on the ground you want to be able to zero in on the day-to-day pulse of a place, the micro stuff that locals talk about around the water-cooler at work: the concert they’re looking forward to; the best place to watch a sold-out hockey game; a new restaurant that isn’t living up to the hype.
